Privacy Policy
Uname is an AI companion app. This policy explains what we collect, why, who processes it, and the choices and rights you have. We've tried to write it plainly.
1. Who we are
Uname is operated by [Legal entity / your name]. If you have any question about this policy or your data, contact us at privacy@uname.ai.
2. The short version
- We collect what you give us (your account details and the things you share with Uname) and a small amount of technical data needed to run the app.
- Your conversations are sent to AI providers (Anthropic and Google) solely to generate Uname's replies.
- We do not show ads, we do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not sell your personal information.
- You can delete your account and all associated data at any time, from inside the app (Settings → Delete my account).
3. Information we collect
a) Information you provide
- Account: email address and password (passwords are stored only as salted hashes by our authentication provider — we never see them).
- Profile: your name, and an optional phone number (used only so people you know can send you a connection request — it is never shown publicly).
- Optional details you choose to add: a rough location (a city or country you type in — we do not collect GPS/precise location), your preferred language, an optional profile photo, and "about you" notes.
- Your content: your conversations with Uname, your group "room" messages, moods you log, notes you write about the people in your circle, and any "voices"/personas you create.
b) Information collected automatically
- Device/locale: time zone and locale (so Uname understands your time of day and language).
- Push token: a notification identifier (if you enable notifications) so we can send check-ins and connection alerts.
- Operational data: basic, aggregated reliability/usage signals and rate-limiting counters used to keep the service running and prevent abuse.
c) Subscriptions (if/when you purchase)
If you buy a subscription, the purchase is handled by Apple (and, on Android, Google). We receive confirmation of your subscription status, not your payment card details.
We do not use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
4. How we use your information
- To provide the core experience — letting you talk with Uname and connect with people you choose.
- To generate Uname's responses (see AI processing below).
- To send notifications you've opted into.
- To keep the service secure, reliable, and free from abuse.
- To manage subscriptions and entitlements.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We rely on your consent and on the performance of our agreement with you (providing the app) as our legal bases, and on our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure.
5. AI processing of your conversations
To produce Uname's replies, the content of your messages (and relevant context you've shared) is sent to our AI model providers — Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini) — which process it to generate a response and return it to us. These providers act as our processors for this purpose. We send only what's needed to generate the reply. We do not use your conversations to train third-party advertising models.
6. The Connections / Rooms feature
Uname lets you connect with people you know (by phone number, with their acceptance) and share "rooms." When you connect with someone:
- The other person must accept your request before any room is created.
- We maintain a strict privacy firewall: things you tell Uname privately are not revealed to other members of a shared room unless you share them there yourself.
- Information you post in a shared room is visible to the other members of that room.
7. Who we share information with
We share personal information only with the service providers ("sub-processors") that make the app work:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication, file storage, hosting |
| Anthropic | AI model that generates Uname's responses |
| Google (Gemini) | AI model that generates Uname's responses |
| Expo | Delivery of push notifications |
| Apple (and Google Play) | Subscription billing |
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect rights and safety, or as part of a business transfer. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
8. Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Settings → Delete my account). Deleting your account permanently removes your profile, conversations, moods, notes, voices, room memberships, and uploaded files, and deletes your authentication identity. Some minimal records may persist briefly in encrypted backups and are overwritten on our backup rotation; aggregated, non-identifying operational data may be retained.
9. Security
Data is encrypted in transit. Access is protected by authentication and database row-level security so that you can only reach your own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and to fix issues quickly.
10. International transfers
Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for these transfers.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live (e.g., EEA/UK under GDPR, California under CCPA/CPRA), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. You can exercise deletion directly in the app, or contact us at privacy@uname.ai for any request. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
12. Children
Uname is intended for users 17 and older and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Not a crisis or medical service
Uname is a supportive companion, not a healthcare provider, therapist, or emergency service. It does not provide medical, psychological, or professional advice. If you are in crisis or may harm yourself or others, contact your local emergency number or a crisis hotline immediately.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
